The Apple Pie Mindset

“Write a poem about how emotions are stupid”

I begin – on a crawling, uncalibrated distance
in a cowardly morning that grumbles away
in my numb dimness- unlatched from sleep.

because memories spilled my dreams
like the icy veins of snowflakes crying
and my tongue and skin go blind like iron.

My head teasing ragged melodies-
echos from last night’s smoldering sleep
like an apple pie unbaking on my pillow.

I begin unsteady because I feel,
the world, the touchless sunlight, the morning
is an ether that stretches my limbs like pretzels
encrusted with falling salt, unscraped by hunger.

when weather digs dreams in the doughy soul-
every morning the lush, sanitizing waking.

Mists of Maleficent

“a poem about maleficent”

From mists to mists, the maleficent
black like scraps
of night cast down, she swoops.

She sleeps in sharp brambles,
soaking in a darker nature
waiting for her peace to pierce.

Whistles of fresh death flush
on the song of the black bird,
claws digging into her shroud.

She listens like snow under the sun,
soaking in her darker nature;
waiting for her beauty to die.

Brown Boredom

“i think a poem about the loss of imagination/curiosity as people become ‘grown up’ would be interesting”

The echo of brown boredom
calls us to crouch and sleep.
Drift like it doesn’t matter
-like the walls are untouchable.

Life is limited to time spent relaxed
every heartbeat is aimed for blood
to pump, pump, pump for regurgitating reason.

Days long ago were made for galloping-
exploring the scrambled for fun.
Tasting has dissolved into eating
and the rubber of our soles wear thinner.

It is necessary to nurture the wild.
Trap the stars in our eyes.
Cage the craving curiosity.
Weave nets to snag rafts.
We perch on waves of melancholy;
watching our footprints wash away.
